To Traditionally or Self-Publish – THAT is the Question

The Self-Publishing Choice

Self-publishing or Traditional Publishing - ASK Yourself

You did it. You sat down to write a book and after months (or years) of plotting, research, rewrites and editing you finally finished your manuscript. You laughed, you cried, you poured your soul onto the page and now you need to decide on the next step. Do you craft a query letter and start submitting to publishers and/or agents, or do you publish your story yourself?

The option to self-publish is available to everyone, but not everyone should self-publish. And while securing a contract may be one of the most exciting prospects in the publishing process, several factors should be considered before signing your baby over to someone who—in the end—won’t be as invested  in the success of your book as you are.

So, how do you determine if you’re a self-publishing guru? Let’s explore the tools you will need!

What Can a Publisher Do that I Can’t?

This is the most important question you will need to ask, and before you answer, you should also step back for a second to take an accurate assessment of your skills.

Can you format your manuscript for eBook and/or print publication?

How computer savvy are you? Do you know what Styles are in MS Word or, if not, do you think you can learn?

Formatting a manuscript for publication is not that difficult…IF you’re computer savvy enough to accomplish the deed. There are plenty of books and even online classes that can help with step-by-step instructions. If you know your way around a computer, then you can probably do this part yourself.

If you can’t, however, then keep in mind you will need to come up with a budget so you can pay someone else to do it. Fiverr usually offers a slew of inexpensive options, but be careful. Not everyone on Fiverr is on the up-and-up. Ask your fellow authors if they have an assistant or eBook and print formatter they trust. Prices can range from $50 up to $300 to format a manuscript.
